Pantelis N. Mikropoulos was born in Kavala, Greece on 1967. He received the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1991 and 1995, respectively.
He held postdoctoral positions at the University of Manchester, Manchester, U.K. (1997 -1999) and at AUTh (2000-2001). He was senior engineer with Public Power Corporation SA, Greece (2000-2001) and Assistant Professor with Technological Educational Institute of Crete (2001-2003). In 2003 and 2010, he was elected Assistant Professor and Associate Professor, respectively, in high voltage engineering at AUTh, and since 2005 he has been the Director of the High Voltage Laboratory at AUTh.
His current research interests include the broad area of high voltage engineering with an emphasis given on:
- Surface dielectric strength of insulating materials in air, influence of atmospheric conditions
- Electric breakdown mechanism of air, influence of atmospheric conditions
- Lightning protection
- Insulation coordination for power systems
- High Voltage measuring devices and systems
He is a member of the Editorial Board for the
IET Sci. Meas. Technol. and reviewer for the IEEE Trans. PWRD, IEEE Trans. DMR, J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys., IOP Meas. Sci. Technol., SIMPAT journals. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece, CIGRE, IET, IEEE and of the Steering Committee of UPEC.
Dr. Mikropoulos is a co-author of more than 60 scientific publications in Journals and Conference Proceedings in the topic of High Voltage Engineering. He was awarded a postdoctoral Scholarship from the Greek State Scholarship Foundation (2001), the ISH ‘99 Hydro - Quebec prize paper award (1999) and a postdoctoral contract EPSRC Grant (1997).
